Years ago, when General Motors “was still a sergeant”, the police’s motto was “Servamus et Servimus”, meaning “we protect and we serve”. At the time, Pollex unofficially, changed it to “we protect and we serve and we enrich attorneys and advocates”.
As an outsider, it is unknown to Pollex if this official part of the motto supra, is in fact still the motto of the SAPS.
Irrespective of whether it still is, the latter part of the motto (unofficially inserted by Pollex) is nowadays as applicable and/or fitting as ever (Afrikaans: “toepaslik en/of passend”). See for example what was said as a postscript to Burford v Minister of Police, unreported case No CA 128/2015 dated 10 November 2015 (ECG) in Pollex in Servamus: June 2017, namely:
“Note that a news item that appeared in News24 dated 20 April 2017 under the heading, ‘Parliament concerned about growing civil claims against police’, contains the finding of Parliament’s police portfolio committee in connection with civil claims against the police.
